Having said that...
Not only is it important to deliver what the client wants, but it is important to give them more. What the heck are they paying you money for if you just give them what they ask for. I think it's important to listen to their concerns/problems and gather all the information possible from them. Don't make assumptions, listen. I also think it's important to listen to what they think is a solution, and what they like/don't like. However, I think it's important to take things a step further and give them what they ask for but do your research and give them more than what they ask for—as long as it still meets their goals. It's a great accomplishment when you can deliver a Lexus-like brochure/ad to your client when they were only expecting the quality of a Buick. Meet and exceed their needs is what I like about this line of work.
